INTRODUCTION
The Ruxcon panel discussion returns once again and is ready to ignite conversation on issues that have popped up during the past year. This year we are focusing on topics that have been covered by the technology and mainstream media, and it will be up to our esteemed panel of experts and commentators to separate fact from fiction and offer insight into what can be complex issues. As always, our panel consists of passionate experts from the entire spectrum of the computer security universe.
The panel is held as an informal discussion between our experts. Special guest speakers may pop in and out of the panel and they will be able to provide their own specific insight into the discussion at hand. Delegates are invited to use the questions we've given to our panel members as a starting point and contribute to the panel by asking questions throughout the session.

Dr Suelette Dreyfus, from the Dept of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, wrote the first mainstream book about computer hacking in Australia. Authored with Julian Assange, ‘Underground’ has been translated into 7 languages and made into 2 films. Before earning her PhD, she worked as a professional journalist in the tech field, reporting for The Age, SMH, Australian and numerous tech magazines. She’s part of Invisible.im, which supports the development of Ricochet. She was also part of the team that developed Rubberhose, believed to be the world’s first freely available deniable encryption archive.
JILL SLAY
Professor ADFA & Director of the Australian Centre for Cyber Security
Professor Jill Slay is Director of the Australian Centre for Cyber Security at UNSW Canberra @ ADFA. This centre has developed critical mass in cross-disciplinary research and teaching in Cyber Security to serve the Australian Government and Defence Force and help strengthen the Digital Economy. She has established an international research reputation in cyber security and has worked in collaboration with many industrial partners. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the information technology industry through contributions in the areas of forensic computer science, security, protection of infrastructure and cyber-terrorism. She was made a Fellow of the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium for her service to the information security industry (and holds their CISSP and CCFP certifications). She has published one book and more than 120 refereed book chapters, journal articles or research papers in information assurance, critical infrastructure protection, security and forensic computing in the last 10 years. She has completed the supervision of 16 PhDs and many Masters and Honours theses and has been awarded over AUD 2 million in Australian Government Category 1 research income, including a Future Fellowship.
STILGHERRIAN
Journalist
Stilgherrian is a freelance journalist, commentator and podcaster who covers the politics of the internet and the way it’s changing power relationships at every level of society. He’s particularly interested in security, privacy, cybercrime and hoovering up bulldust.
He studied computing science and linguistics before a wide range of media and technology work that’s included ABC Radio, magazines and online media. He survived the first dotcom boom.
Stilgherrian currently writes for ZDNet, Crikey and others, produces the podcasts Corrupted Nerds (in hiatus) and the rather shouty The 9pm Edict, is a frequent guest on radio and TV, and tweets far too prolifically.
RICHARD JOHNSON
Manager of Vulnerability Development for Cisco Talos
Richard Johnson is a computer security specialist in the area of software vulnerability analysis. Currently the Manager of Vulnerability Development for Cisco Talos, Richard offers 12 years of expertise and leadership in the software security industry. Current responsibilities include research and development of advanced fuzzing and crash analysis technologies facilitating the automation of the vulnerability triage and discovery process. Richard has presented annually at top-tier industry conferences worldwide for over a decade and was co-founder of the Uninformed Journal.
BARRY ANDERSON
Security Architect
Barry Anderson has over 20 years experience designing, deploying and supporting complex multi-vendor Security solutions. He currently works as a Security Solutions Architect for Cisco Security Solutions, Asia Pacific team, where he provides Security design and implementation services as well as Security Architecture Review consulting services.
Barry spoke at the 2015 SANS DFIR Summit on automating the evidence-processing phase of investigations using DevOps methodologies and co-presented on the ELK stack and its use in Incident Response at Cisco Live 2016.
